The beneficiaries of the Green Bus Pilot Project are municipalities and public transport providers who are committed to a greener public transport and have the appropriate infrastructure for operating or developing electric buses.
The introduction of e-buses in a city as part of an integrated mobility strategy offers an opportunity to rethink the existing bus system, to improve the quality of the service, to improve the relationship between traffic and the urban space, and to boost the city image and liveability. By using these buses, cities can not only create a healthier environment for their residents with cleaner air and less noise pollution, but also contribute to the fight against climate change by reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.
The Green Bus Program builds on the development of a new timetable that serves passenger needs and the quality expectations towards public transport. When creating a vehicle fleet of the right age and composition, the primary goal is to provide a service that optimises quality of life, environmental protection, as well as economic and financial/budgetary sustainability.
During the implementation of the Green Bus Pilot Project, the cities selected by the Project Direction Committee based on the Feasibility Study of the Pilot Project will receive HUF 56 million in support for the onsite implementation of the demonstrations after concluding support contracts. Municipalities can involve public utilities, infrastructure providers, communication providers, and educational and professional organisations in the onsite implementation of pilot projects.
The Green Bus Pilot Project was launched as the first step of the Green Bus Program, which places public transport on a new, environmentally friendly footing, the objective of which is to integrate electric buses into local transport for demonstration purposes in large rural cities, to gather experience in the field of vehicle procurement and use, as well as infrastructure building and charging.
In the framework of two initiatives, the Pilot Project examines the challenges associated with the procurement and commissioning of electric buses, and gathers experience for the Green Bus Program, thereby facilitating the transition to electric buses in urban transport. As one of the pillars of the two-part Pilot Project, the Hungarian State supports the purchase of new electric buses and self-propelled trolleybuses and the partial replacement of the current bus fleet by providing state funds of up to HUF 800 million for the purpose of providing local transport as part of local public services. The proposal to increase the HUF 800 million subsidy by HUF 627 million is included in the amendment proposal of Government decision 1537/2019 (IX.20.). In addition, in the demonstration pilot project, with the use of additional state funds of HUF 1,200 million, a minimum of seven locations with onsite infrastructure will enable the use of electric buses for demonstration, technical, timetable organisation, driving and communication purposes.
